Contribute letters for ‘Letters to 87’ book

The book will honor Dwight Clark, and all proceeds will go to the 49ers Golden Heart Fund.

Matt Maiocco and NBC Sports Bay Area put together a touching documentary this summer to honor Dwight Clark after his passing.

Prior to Clark’s passing due to complications from ALS, he told Maiocco that he would love to have 49ers fans write letters to him about The Catch. It is the most famous play in 49ers history, and Clark wanted to hear from fans describing their recollection of event, and what it meant to them.

A handful of letters were read at his memorial service, and now, Maiocco is compiling a book of letters. The book will be called “Letters to 87” and all proceeds from the book will go to support the Golden Heart Fund. The fund was created to providing “support and relief for alumni players in times of physical, emotional and financial need.”

If you did not send in a letter before Clark’s passing, Maiocco is still accepting submissions for inclusion in the book. If you or anybody in your family wants to submit a letter, you can do so until roughly mid November. The sooner you can submit your letter, the better. To submit a letter, mail it to:
