49ers have lengthy injury report, bring in running backs for workout

The San Francisco 49ers have a lengthy injury report following their Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the names that are banged up following the game:

RB Matt Breida (ankle)
WR Dante Pettis (knee)
OT Joe Staley (knee)
C Weston Richburg (knee)
OT Mike McGlinchey (knee)
TE Garrett Celek (quad)
LB Reuben Foster (shoulder)

Shanahan said Pettis will be out next Monday against the Green Bay Packers, and Breida is doubtful to play. Shanahan confirmed Breida did not have a high ankle sprain but it is serious enough that it will take some time to get back to 100 percent. The rest of the list will be re-evaluated on Thursday when the 49ers return to practice.

The team brought in running backs to figure out options behind Alfred Morris and Raheem Mostert. Former 49er Jeremy McNichols was part of the workout, along with four other players Shanahan did not name. Practice squader Jeff Wilson is also a candidate to get promoted. The team will have meetings the next couple days, but does not have practice until Thursday. That gives the team some time to make a decision at the position.

Speaking of decisions, Shanahan said the team will likely add a third quarterback this week. Nick Mullens will remain the backup to C.J. Beathard, but the team will add someone at least for the practice squad. Two weeks ago, the team worked out Kyle Allen, Kellen Clemens, Matt Simms, Tom Savage, T.J. Yates, Landry Jones, and E.J. Manuel. If they add a quarterback, it will likely be one of those guys.
