49ers work out 5 running backs in light of Matt Breida injury

New, comments

The 49ers are considering a host of options at running back.

The San Francisco 49ers might be down a key offensive weapon on Monday against the Green Bay Packers. Running back Matt Breida suffered an ankle sprain, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said he would be doubtful for Week 6.

The team could decide to promote running back Jeff Wilson from the practice squad, but they also might consider some veteran options. The team worked out Shane Vereen, Charcandrick West, Andre Ellington, Matthew Dayes, and Jeremy McNichols, per ESPN’s Field Yates. Shanahan mentioned McNichols on Monday, but would not confirm any other names.

Alfred Morris will serve as the team’s starting running back, and right now Raheem Mostert is the only other healthy option on the 53-man roster. The 49ers signed running back Matthew Dayes to the practice squad on Tuesday. Dayes was a 2017 seventh round pick of the Cleveland Browns, and was released this year after appearing in all 16 games for the Browns last year.
