49ers re-sign Tom Savage ... again

The San Francisco 49ers formally placed Raheem Mostert on injured reserve, and they made a couple other moves. The team placed cornerback Emmanuel Moseley on injured reserve a day after promoting him from the practice squad. They also signed quarterback Tom Savage a day after releasing him.

Mostert broke his arm on a rushing attempt, while Moseley suffered a dislocated shoulder on a special teams play. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Mostert had surgery on Friday, and Moseley will have surgery on Tuesday.

The decision to re-sign Savage is an intriguing one. They once again have three quarterbacks, and one has to wonder what the plan is with Nick Mullens. If he starts next week against the New York Giants ahead of C.J. beathard, does Savage get released to make room elsewhere?

The 49ers currently have a free roster spot, so it’s hard to tell what exactly the plan is. The players are off through Monday, and will return to the facility on Tuesday to prepare for the Giants. The 49ers will need to add a running back at some point. They have Jeff Wilson and Matt Dayes on the practice squad, and one of them is likely to be promoted. They also signed cornerback Greg Mabin and wide receiver Victor Bolden to the practice after releasing them during the week. Both are candidates for promotion to the 53-man roster.
