Tom Savage will not be re-joining the 49ers this week

Bengals fans can blame it on Hue Jackson.

The Tom Savage revolving door has come to a close in Santa Clara, for the time being. The 49ers waived Savage over the weekend, and on Monday the Cincinnati Bengals claimed him off waivers, per Pro Football Talk.

The Bengals placed Andy Dalton on injured reserve after he injured his thumb on Sunday, and that means the Bengals quarterback depth chart is now 49ers-heavy! Jeff Driskel was Dalton’s backup, and I imagine Savage will be competing with him for that role.

There is no word as to whether the Bengals will add another quarterback. They are currently 5-6 and sit a game back of the Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts. The Ravens hold the second wild card spot. If Cincinnati wants to compete for a playoff berth, Driskel and Savage is not going to cut it, but I’m not holding my breath for the Bengals to make a bold move.

In the meantime, the 49ers will not have their third quarterback this week. They could sign another, particularly given how poorly Nick Mullens looked against the Bucs in Week 12, but we’ll find out by Wednesday if another quarterback will join the mix.
