Golden Nuggets: Reuben Foster salary cap hit

Good morning! The 49ers are into their second day of practice, and I think we are slowly moving out of the Reuben Foster news cycle. Washington is firmly in the middle of it, but for the 49ers, I don’t imagine we’ll see a whole lot more about the topic. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh meets with the media on Thursday, so he will get some questions, but that will likely wrap it up from the 49ers perspective.

Speaking of Foster, our man Jason Hurley had a quick look at dead money the 49ers would carry after releasing Foster. It will be $1,641,440 this year, and $2,355,660 next year.

The 2019 dead money is the 2019 and 2020 signing bonus prorated money. Even if nobody had claimed Foster off waivers, that would have been the case. First round picks have significant guarantees in their contracts, but Foster’s guarantees were wiped out after his offseason arrests and suspension. The 49ers still owed him that money if he was on the roster, but they did not owe it to him with a release. Washington picks up his base salaries and fifth year option, but there are no guarantees in the deal.

Meanwhile, the 49ers were back at practice on Wednesday, so the links discuss some of that. Pierre Garçon was back on the practice field, listed as limited due to his knee injury. Marquise Goodwin remains away from the team while dealing with family issues, so we’ll see what that means for the starting wide receivers this Sunday against Seattle.

On to the links!
