One game against an awful defense. A game that turned in one of the best debuts in the last decade. I know I wrote about Mullens being a trade candidate, but if all goes well, the 49ers may have an even better problem: a quarterback controversy. Mullens is young and raw, Garoppolo is tuned and about to enter his prime. Given the 49ers’ quarterback problems in recent years, I wouldn’t mind a controversy.
That’s a VERY big longshot as debuts tend to be shot down just as quick as they start once teams get film on a quarterback. It was something to think about, maybe a throwback to the days of Joe Montana and Steve Young.
It will never happen, for the above reasons and the fact that Mullens wasn’t forced out of another NFL team like Steve Young was. He has one year left on his contract and you can bet if he lights up the league the rest of the season, he’s going to do his best to get out of Santa Clara even as a restricted free agent. He’s not going to stick around and learn for a few years when there’s enough QB needy teams available on the timing of that contract. That is, if the 49ers were to go with Garoppolo. Which they would.
