The San Francisco 49ers placed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on injured reserve and brought back a familiar face for the secondary. The team announced they have signed defensive back Tyvis Powell to a one-year deal.
Powell (6-3, 211) appeared in four games (one start) this season with the 49ers and registered five tackles and one forced fumble on defense in addition to one special teams tackle prior to being waived by the team on November 12, 2018. He was signed to the New York Jets practice squad on December 4 and released on December 11.
Powell will provide depth behind Tarvarius Moore, who is expected to start opposite Richard Sherman these final two games. Greg Mabin has been the cornerback behind Moore, so he will likely be competing with Powell for special teams and dime work.
