Jeff Wilson gets opportunity after Matt Breida aggravated ankle injury

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have dealt with a host of injuries this season, but it has given us a chance to get a better handle on players further down the depth chart. On Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, that gave us more of running back Jeff Wilson.

Matt Breida has been dealing with an ankle injury for much of this season, and early in Sunday’s game, there was an extensive rotation between Breida and Wilson. Breida was not listed as being injured, but he did aggravate the ankle during the game, on a 26-yard screen pass. Wilson finished the game as the team’s sole running back, rushing 15 times for 61 yards and catching eight passes for 73 yards.

Following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan told the media that Breida had aggravated his ankle during pre-game warmups, and then aggravated it further during the game. He had been listed as limited on Wednesday and Thursday, and then full on Friday. It’s safe to say he’ll be limited at best for much of this week. Given how Wilson performed on Sunday, maybe the team gives him another sizable opportunity this coming week against Denver.
