The NFL announced the 2019 Pro Bowl rosters, and San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was named an alternate. The three defensive tackles on the roster are Aaron Donald (Los Angeles Rams), Fletcher Cox (Philadelphia Eagles), and Akiem Hicks, (Chicago Bears). If one or more of the three are unable to attend the game (injuries, Super Bowl, other), Buckner would be elevated to the roster.
Buckner chatted with the media on Thursday after practice, and had a chance to address not earning a Pro Bowl nod (via Mindi Bach).
“The organization, coaches, everybody knows my abilities and what I can do on the field. I just line up and go as hard as I can on Sundays. I mean the recognition would be cool, but it is what it is, it’s out of my hands … They’ve got me as an alternate so at least they know my name. Now I’ve gotta make ‘em remember it.”
It’s interesting that Buckner mentions that, “at least they now my name. Now I’ve gotta make ‘em remember it.” He was mic’d up for the 49ers Week 15 win over the Seattle Seahawks, and at one point before kickoff he was talking to rookie wide receiver Dante Pettis on the sideline. He said, “They already know your name. Make ‘em remember it.” That would appear to be his phrase of choice at this point in his career. People know you, now it’s time to make sure they don’t forget you.
His whole mic’d up is worth a look. He talks about getting wanting to get two or three sacks that day, and we see just how excited he and others are with the win. You can watch it below, or click here.
