The San Francisco 49ers announced on Wednesday that they have promoted wide receiver Steven Dunbar, Jr. to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. He is taking the roster spot that was held by safety Jaquiski Tartt prior to going on injured reserve. The 49ers made the move due to Dante Pettis’ season-ending MCL sprain, and the questionable nature of Marquise Goodwin’s calf contusion.
The move is of note for another reason. As noted by Cam Inman and Matt Maiocco, Dunbar is officially the final person from the team’s season-opening ten-man practice squad to get a crack at a 53-man roster. Below is the group the team first signed after roster cuts. Over the course of the season, the team has promoted and released an assortment of practice squad players, while also having opposing teams sign some of their players.
WR Steven Dunbar, Jr.: Promoted to the 53-man roster on Wednesday, expected to play in season finale vs. Rams.
TE Ross Dwelley: Promoted to the 53-man roster on October 15th to replace Cole Wick after the latter dropped a touchdown pass the week prior. In ten games, he has one reception for eight yards, and has played primarily on special teams — with 24 offensive snaps and 141 special teams snaps.
CB Emmanuel Moseley: Promoted to the 53-man roster on November 1st. He played three special teams snap against the Oakland Raiders and dislocated his shoulder. He was placed on injured reserve on November 2nd.
QB Nick Mullens: Promoted to the 53-man roster on September 26th after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL. Took over as starting quarterback in Week 9 and has remained the starter through the season finale. He has completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 1,995 yards with ten touchdowns and seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 91.2.
DB Tyvis Powell: Promoted to the 53-man roster on September 22nd to prove safety depth after Jaquiski Tartt first injured his shoulder. He played on special teams in Weeks 3 and 4 before being waived and signed back to the practice squad. He was promoted again in Week 7, and then waived after playing 57 snaps at safety in Week 9. He was promoted again after Ahkello Witherspoon was placed on injured reserve heading into Week 16. He played eight special teams snaps and one defensive snap last week.
DL Niles Scott: Released three days after signing on the practice squad. Subsequently signed to the Denver Broncos practice squad, and then signed to the Cincinnati Bengals 53-man roster, where he currently serves as defensive tackle depth.
LB Pita Taumoepenu: Promoted to the 53-man roster on December 5th after Dekoda Watson was placed on injured reserve. Played five defensive snaps and 10 special teams snaps in Week 14. Has played exclusively on special teams the past two weeks.
OL Najee Toran: Promoted to the 53-man roster on September 12th after Eric Magnuson was expected to be inactive a second straight week. Was active but a DNP in Week 2, then inactive in Weeks 3 and 4. He was waived on October 6th and re-signed to the practice squad on October 9th, where he currently resides.
RB Jeff Wilson Jr.: Promoted to the 53-man roster on November 24th. The 49ers began deactivating Alfred Morris and giving Wilson an opportunity. Wilson has 257 rushing yards (4.1 ypc) and 98 receiving yards in five games, including one start in Week 14. He has also fumbled the ball three times and lost two of them. He is expected to start this weekend in place of an injured Matt Breida.
OL Zack Golditch: Released from the practice squad on October 6th. He subsequently signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad and then signed to the Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster on November 5th.
