Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is dealing with a complication following his surgery on a broken tibia and fibula, according to reports. Smith suffered a brutal leg injury last month and multiple reports say he is dealing with an infection. Two Washington media sources reported on the infection, with NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport confirming the infection reports, but also saying it’s premature to say what it means for Smith’s playing future.
Hearing from several different people over last few days that Alex Smith is having devastating complications from his broken leg surgery battling infection. Supposedly he's had multiple surgeries to try to combat infection. Chances of him playing again in real jeaopardy.— Eric Bickel (@EBJunkies) December 6, 2018
My curiosity about Alex Smith's silence evoked a tip, which prompted some research, which yielded more info, which feels solid. I'm told Smith indeed still in hospital with post-op infection. Will likely require re-intervention, incl possibly "partial reconstruction."— Burgundy Blog (@BurgundyBlog) December 6, 2018
Washington issued a statement acknowledging the concerns and asking for privacy for Smith and his family.
Most 49ers fans will always have a soft spot for Smith given all he went through in the Bay Area after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. He’s in our thoughts regardless as he battles through more adversity. Fingers crossed that everything gets cleared up.
