Pro Football Focus recently posted their ranking of most efficient pass blocking offensive tackles, and the San Francisco 49ers had both of their tackles on the list. Trent Brown just edged out Joe Staley, with the players ranking fourth and fifth respectively.
It’s fitting then that they ranked similarly in Bleacher Report’s NFL 1000 rankings. B/R’s Doug Farrar leads a team of analysts who break down film on every player in the NFL, and rank them accordingly, both during and after the season. In their left tackle rankings a few weeks back, Staley showed up at No. 10. They released right tackle rankings on Thursday, and Trent Brown also ranked No. 10.
Staley is settled in at left tackle, and will likely finish out his career as the 49ers left tackle. It remains to be seen when he will retire, but for the time being, he is doing solid work.
The question of Trent Brown’s future however, is a little trickier. His rookie contract carries him through the 2018 season, and then he will be an unrestricted free agent. At his best, he can be one of the best tackles in the game. However, weight, conditioning, and sometimes playing down to opponents means we see some inconsistency. And the comments from Duke Manyweather and Doug Farrar both reflect the issues Brown has dealt with through the first three seasons of his NFL career.
Coming off surgery for a torn labrum, a significant spotlight will be on Brown this coming offseason. Does he come into camp in “the best shape of his career” or does he struggle to keep off the pounds post-surgery? Given that it’s his walk year, one would think he would be extra motivated, but who knows at this point.
With that in mind, will we see Brown on the 49ers roster when Week 1 of the 2019 season rolls around? If you can’t see the poll below, click here.
