So what can I say about the Jimmy Garoppolo extension? Rather, what can I say that hasn’t been said already?
I think it’s best said by a text message my friend sent me shortly after the announcement happened Thursday:
“We got ‘em!”
That’s all that’s said. Jimmy Garoppolo is the best quarterback you could sign this offseason, the best prospect (if you want to call him that), and he’s in San Francisco. I don’t really care that the 49ers gave him the biggest contract in NFL history. 1: That contract gives him trust from the organization. He can restructure it later for paycuts if it comes to that. 2: For a quarterback, that’s what you have to do.
Yes, there’s the concerns on the sample size and all that, but at the end of the day, somebody would give Jimmy Garoppolo that money. If the 49ers franchised him, they most likely would have to give him more money if they worked an extension out. If he hit free agency, just think of the bidding war that would go on for his services.
This was the right move, and the 49ers still have a TON of salary cap space to sign free agents. Not only that, the team even agrees with the move. They all said Jimmy G should get paid and he did.
