Prior to last night’s news that Reuben Foster had been arrested on charges of domestic violence of possession of an assault weapon, four of NFL.com’s draft analysts had all released their first 2018 NFL mock drafts. It is a somewhat fitting coincidence that all four had the San Francisco 49ers selecting the same player, Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
Here’s what the four analysts had to say about Edmunds to the 49ers.
Chad Reuter: Edmunds is athletic enough to handle coverage duties and rush the passer.
Daniel Jeremiah: Edmunds is one of my favorite players in the draft. He has a rare blend of size, speed and athleticism. He would be a perfect complement to Reuben Foster at the second level of the 49ers’ defense.
Bucky Brooks: Versatile playmaker ideally suited to play the “Leo” role in the 49ers’ defense.
Lance Zierlein: Edmunds is a physical freak with a combination of height, weight, speed and production that we’ve never seen at linebacker.
What is also interesting is that three of the four had Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith mocked the next spot to the Oakland Raiders. The lone exception was Bucky Brooks, who had Smith going No. 27 to the New Orleans Saints.
The 49ers and Raiders will flip a coin in a couple weeks at the 2018 NFL Combine to determine who has the ninth overall pick and who has the tenth overall pick. Regardless of what the 49ers do with Reuben Foster, linebacker is likely on their radar over the next two months. It is also firmly on the Raiders radar, so that coin flip could prove to be a pretty big deal.
