The 49ers have a dilemma on their hands. Following his arrest one month ago for marijuana possession, star rookie linebacker Reuben Foster was arrested again on Sunday. This time it was a domestic violence and gun charge. It is being reported that Reuben Foster allegedly dragged his girlfriend at a Los Gatos home. His girlfriend is also reported to have told 911 that he had multiple rifles at the home.
Reuben Foster was released on bail on Sunday night. On Monday, he met with 49ers officials in Santa Clara. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have to figure out how long they want to deal with a talented player with mounting issues. Last offseason, they released CB Tramaine Brock within a day of his domestic violence arrest. It sent a strong message considering that the 49ers have been one of the teams with the most arrests in the last few years. Lynch and Shanahan drafted Reuben knowing the issues that he had. They were hoping he would mature, but the evidence is showing he has not.
The Reuben Foster situation will probably force the 49ers to re-evaluate their linebacker needs this offseason. Since he has proven himself unable to stay out of trouble, even if he stays with the team for the foreseeable future, the 49ers will want to make sure they have a backup plan since he will have trouble staying on the field. They took the chance in drafting Reuben and right now he is letting himself, his girlfriend, and his team down. The 49ers could be forced to make a decision that this regime was hoping it could avoid.
