I posted a couple of links below to articles on Solomon Thomas having a hard time as an outside pass rusher in the NFL. I personally think he can make the transition if he works hard enough. The 49ers need to bring him into camp to exclusively play outside and let him work hard at it until he gets it down. It will pay great dividends in the end. Perhaps that is the motivation for bringing in Chris Kiffin? We just need to be patient. I didn’t feel that way when we drafted him but I have changed my mind after watching him play last season. The man has immense physical talent, he just needs to learn how to use it.
I know a lot of people think we are going to spend boatloads of money in free agency on a wide receiver. However, if we look at the way Shanahan and Lynch have handled the balance between signing free agents and drafting players, we can faintly see a pattern emerging. They overspend a little on a free agent vet and then go draft a player to fill the position in the future.
That is what I see happening at wide receiver. Last year we spent about twelve million dollars on Pierre Garcon, Aldrick Robinson and Marquise Goodwin. I do not think it is completely inconceivable that Shanahan would spend large sums of salary cap space on a free agent wide receiver but I do find it highly unlikely. I think it is much more likely that he drafts a wide receiver in the second or third round and grooms them to be Garcon’s replacement.
I don’t think they will draft a wide receiver in the first round only because the value is not there. I would be completely surprised if Shanahan believes any of the wide receivers that could go in the first are worth drafting that early.
