Report: 49ers interested in Oklahoma State WR Marcell Ateman

The 49ers need some big bodies at wide receiver, and Tony Pauline is hearing they are interested in an Oklahoma State product.

The San Francisco 49ers have some solid wide receivers to build around, but they could use a bigger body for the red zone. It turns out they might already have their eye on one. Draft analyst Tony Pauline is reporting the team is interested in Oklahoma State wide receiver Marcell Ateman heading into the 2018 NFL Combine.

Ateman measured in at the Senior Bowl at 6’4, 216 pounds. He is coming off a strong senior season with 59 receptions for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns. Pauline reports he was estimated at a 4.60 40, and he thinks a “good” Combine could see him get near 4.45.

Ateman has been working with former Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson on his speed and 40 starts in Dallas. Johnson has been praising Ateman’s work ethic to teams he’s spoken with. I’m told the receiver-needy San Francisco 49ers are one of several teams high on Ateman.

Pauline sees him as a third round pick at this point, with a chance to climb as high as the top 45 picks if he can put together that “good” Combine.

Lance Zierlein has put together his annual pre-Combine scouting report, and sees Ateman as a guy who can start as a backup and work his way up the depth chart.

Long target with good size and functional speed. Ateman played in a vertical offense that took advantage of subpar secondaries in his conference and should fit into a West Coast offense as a pro. His frame and ball skills give him instant credibility as a jump ball threat in the red-zone while he continues to hone his skill set. Ateman should be an early backup with a chance to climb the ladder on the depth chart.

Louis Murphy was the team’s tallest wide receiver at a shade over 6’2, but he is hitting free agency and is not a long-term option. Kendrick Bourne is currently the 49ers tallest option under contract. Ateman would tower over the group and bring some much needed size in the red zone. Pierre Garçon can bring necessary physicality down there, but if Ateman can develop into a red zone option, that would certainly be a big help!
