On Friday, the 49ers will be in Indianapolis for a very important event. Yes, the NFL combine starts this week and the 49ers will be there. But the really important event will be the coin toss between the 49ers and the Raiders to determine who picks 9th in the draft. The teams have coin flipped for draft position before. The 49ers won and picked Vernon Davis with the #6 pick in 2006. With all the winning the 49ers have had since Jimmy Garoppolo started playing with the team, this coin flip should be a lock.
The NFL combine starts today and John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have a list of needs that to be addressed. One of those needs is cornerback. The 49ers’ division rival, LA Rams, made a trade to acquire the Kansas City Chiefs’ Marcus Peters. That trade likely means the Rams will not resign Trumaine Johnson, who should get a look by the 49ers. The 49ers’ cornerback depth is thin and the signing of a free agent along with a pick in the draft could be a big help.
One CB free agent that will not be coming to San Francisco is Vontae Davis. Vontae came in for a visit last week, but he opted to go with the Buffalo Bills. In addition to Trumaine Johnson, Malcolm Butler and Kyle Fuller are some of the other names who could be intriguing pickups. With the amount of cap space available, the 49ers can pay as much as they would like to get their guy.
