It was Monday yesterday, which means Dan Kadar of SB Nation — @MockingTheDraft on Twitter and always a good follow — has posted his latest mock draft, as he will every Monday until the draft. It’ll be his final mock before the NFL Scouting Combine gets underway. A lot of questions will be answered at the combine, but for now, it’s time to dig into another mock.
Kadar has the 49ers taking Josh Jackson, cornerback out of Iowa. The reasoning is sound, and he also notes that Jackson’s draft stock could rise with a strong combine performance. He is just the kind of physically gifted player to potentially make himself the second corner off the board after Minkah Fitzpatrick.
9. San Francisco 49ers: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
Jackson is another player whose draft stock could move dramatically upward with a good week in Indianapolis. He was a star at Iowa this season and corners with his type of instincts and playmaking ability don’t last long on draft night.
Since the last mock I read that included the 49ers taking Jackson, I’ve watched about two hours of film on him and I’m personally convinced. He’s going to be a star, and I’d welcome the 49ers taking him at No. 9, though Fitzpatrick remains my favorite player in the draft.
It’s worth noting that all of running back Saquon Barkley, defensive end Bradley Chubb, guard Quenton Nelson and Fitzpatrick are all gone by the time the 49ers get on the board at No. 9 in this mock. Tremaine Edmunds, a popular pick for the 49ers, is going at No. 11 to the Miami Dolphins, while Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith goes at No. 19 to the Dallas Cowboys.
