Jimmy Garoppolo may not have won that nice bonus he was in line for if the New England Patriots had won the Super Bowl, but he could be a big winner if reports of a long-term deal are true. Reports have surfaced that Jimmy and the 49ers could have a contract completed in the next couple of days. He is expected to be paid like one of the top-tier quarterbacks in the league. The 49ers would be happy to complete a deal for their franchise quarterback long before the free agency period begins in March.
If the 49ers do complete the long-term deal with Jimmy, that would be quite surprising. It was thought that Jimmy would wait until the free agency period begins to see what a free agent quarterback like Kirk Cousins would get in the open market. With the price of quarterback contracts going up year after year, he could see what Kirk gets and then demand a contract based on that amount. As of now, Jimmy and his agent are likely negotiating around the amount Matt Stafford and Derek Carr received last year when they signed their deals.
With the contract for Jimmy almost done, the 49ers will be able to move on to their next offseason priorities. They will still have a lot of cap space to address their other concerns. Super Bowl Sunday could have offered a way to fill one of the 49ers’ needs. The Patriots’ best cornerback, Malcolm Butler, never made it into the game and there was no explanation why he was left off the field. If Butler and the Patriots are having issues, Butler might be tempted to leave now that he is a free agent. The 49ers have a need for a corner opposite Ahkello Witherspoon and Butler could be one to go after. He’s a good, proven cornerback that can help solidify the defense.
