49ers mock has an interesting trade scenario

Would the 49ers take this trade?

It’s mock draft season, and when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers, there doesn’t seem to be a real consensus for where they’ll go in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. So much of it depends on what happens at quarterback before them. And mock drafts also have the issue of not really being able to predict trades, because draft day can be crazy and surprising.

Of course, some mocks try for the trades anyway. Sometimes they make sense. Sometimes they’re so far out there it’s hilarious. Today, we’re looking at the latest mock from SportingNews, which incorporates trades.

And the 49ers are a willing trade partner. But before we get to the trade, it’s worth noting that popular players mocked to the 49ers — Virginia Tech OLB Tremaine Edmunds, Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and N.C. State defensive end Bradley Chubb — were all taken by other teams by the time the 49ers got around to picking.

I tend to think, in that situation, the 49ers would draft cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick. But in this mock, the Pittsburgh Steelers trade up to get Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen.

A second massive trade-up for a quarterback: The Steelers make a deal in a similar move to what the Chiefs did a year ago for Patrick Mahomes. Pittsburgh can trade its first-round picks this year and next year in order to select Ben Roethlisberger’s future replacement.

A year ago, the Chiefs traded with the Buffalo Bills to move from pick No. 27 to pick No. 10. The Chiefs gave up their third round pick last year and a 2018 first round pick to swap first round picks with the Bills. The Steelers currently sit at No. 28, and the 49ers are at No. 9 or 10, pending their coin flip. It is pretty close to a similar scenario as Chiefs-Bills.

That’s a trade that definition makes sense, and I could see the 49ers making it. They have needs, but they are confident in a lot of their younger players. Cornerback is still a Tier 1 need, but it’s a deep draft at the position as far as I’m concerned.

For the record, they have Fitzpatrick going to the Miami Dolphins at No. 11 overall.

What do you folks think of this?
