The details are coming out regarding the specifics of Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers. Adam Schefter has the scoop on his Facebook page, embedded below.
The deal includes a smaller $7 million signing bonus, but instead uses the 49ers huge amount of 2018 cap space by giving him a $28 million roster bonus. The roster bonus is guaranteed, and unlike a signing bonus, does not pro-rate over the five years of the contract. The cap hit of the $7 million will spread over five years, while the $28 million will all hit in 2018.
He is getting $42.6 million in year one money, between the two bonuses, his base salary, workout bonus, and per-game roster bonus. Through year two, he can make $61.2 million. Through year three, he can make $86.4 million.
Here is the full run down with projected cap hits. The 49ers are looking at a $37 million cap hit in 2018, which would leave them with approximately $76.8 million in cap space.
