People are confusing 49ers LB Pita Taumoepenu with shirtless Tongan flag bearer

I’m not entirely surprised, even though they look nothing alike.

Olympics: Opening Ceremony Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

The Winter Olympics Ceremony are airing, and that has brought back the popular shirtless Tonga flag bearer. Pita Taufatofua is the lone representative from Tonga, having first appeared in the Summer Olympics as their lone representative.

The name might look familiar because the 49ers have a linebacker named Pita Taumoepenu. He was born in the United States but is of Tongan descent and moved to the island when he was three months old. He moved back to the United States when he was 17 and took up football, eventually turning into a pro.

And now, people are confusing him with Taufatofua. As the Opening Ceremony proceeded and the Tongan representative came out, people started tagging our own Pita T on Twitter. I have to think it is due to auto-filling when you start typing @pitatau....

Whatever the case, it continues on. Taufatofua is competing in cross-country skiing, so we’ll see if Taumoepenu gets more mentions on Twitter when that comes up.
