The Tennessee Titans are signing former New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis to a four-year deal that will make him a “top 10 running back,” which I assume means by salary, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Lewis is a player the San Francisco 49ers were reportedly interested in. Lewis would be a great fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and would pair nicely with the quick-release of Jimmy Garoppolo. But I doubt the 49ers were willing to pay him like a top 10 running back, especially with durability concerns.
Still, running back is a concern for the 49ers. They like Matt Breida, and they say they like Joe Williams, but the position needs some security, and Lewis would have fit that bill. There are still some names out there, like Jerick McKinnon, among others, but Lewis was at the top of many 49ers fans’ wishlists.
It sure will be interesting to see how the Titans use the combination of Lewis, Derrick Henry and, of course, quarterback Marcus Mariota. It should be a pretty good combo.
