The 2018 NFL Scouting Combine is underway at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. On Thursday, offensive linemen and running backs took part in the bench press, and on Friday they laced up for on-field drills and workouts. We’ve got results of the former and some results from the latter, and will update when everything is complete.
Running backs and offensive lineman, along with special teamers, comprised the first group of arrivals at the combine. The second group includes quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends. That group was measured on Thursday, hit the weight bench on Friday, and will conduct their on-field drills on Saturday.
In the bench press, Quenton Nelson out of Notre Dame, the top guard in the class, impressed with 35 reps of 225 pounds, tying the highest number from a year ago. As far as running backs go, both of Saquon Barkley of Penn State — the top back in the class — and Nick Chubb of Georgia managed to put up 29 reps of 225 pounds to lead all players at the position.
Barkley also managed a stellar official time of 4.40 in the 40-yard dash on Friday, while Chubb posted a respectable 4.52.
With a need at guard and a potential need at running back, these results are of particular interest to the San Francisco 49ers, of course.
