How would you rate this 5-round mock draft haul for the 49ers?

This mock draft hits on some positions of need, but seems to reach for some projects.

The final draft order is set (aside from trades), and with the Combine and big name free agency behind us, mock drafts gain at least a little more value. It is still a lot of speculation, but mock drafts now at least hold more value than they did back in January or February.

NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter put together his latest 2018 NFL mock draft on Tuesday, and he went a full five rounds with his picks. The San Francisco 49ers have six picks in those rounds, including two in the third round. Trades are guaranteed to shake up the first five rounds, and the 49ers will probably be involved in them at some point.

Here are the six players Reuter mocked to the 49ers.

1 (9). Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech
2 (59). D.J. Chark, WR, LSU
3 (70). Kalen Ballage, RB, Arizona State
3 (74). Rasheem Green, DE, USC
4 (128). Quin Blanding, S, Virginia
5 (143). Andre Chachere, CB, San Jose State

He thinks Edmunds would go higher on a big board, but the run of quarterbacks pushes down talent. Reuter has Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Josh Allen going in the first three picks, and then has the Buffalo Bills trading up to No. 6 to select Baker Mayfield. He has the Broncos selecting Bradley Chubb rather than a quarterback.

At 6’5, 253 pounds, Edmunds brings some crazy size to the linebacker position. Eli Harold weighs more than Edmunds, but Edmunds’ combination of height and weight is impressive. His NFL.com profile lists an NFL comp of Brian Urlacher. They question his instincts, but think he can make up for it with his athletic ability. Getting a chance to work with new inside linebackers coach DeMeco Ryans would be extremely valuable.

The Ballage pick is a little bit of a surprise. He has been getting day three projections, thanks to a combination of excellent physical tools and poor production. He never emerged as “the guy” at Arizona State, but some NFL coach is going to see a guy he can turn into a big time producer.

Green is an intriguing projection, but like Ballage, it’s more projection than recent production. Projects are fine, but the 49ers need edge talent than can produce sooner rather than later.
