Lost in all our draft coverage this week, you may have seen a tweet up about former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith getting arrested. No, we’re not talking about a few weeks ago—and that tweet isn’t being pushed late, he got arrested yet again. As in the morning of March 23rd, 2018.
This time it was for violating a domestic violence restraining order on March 3rd. From my count—and this is not a definite number—it seems like he’s been arrested seven times. There’s two things wrong with that number, for one thing it’s inaccurate, the other—by extension— is it’s not a good thing when someone can’t keep track of your arrests in the first place. And at the rate Smith is going, he might hit double digits before his 30th birthday. That is if a judge doesn’t declare him a menace to society and throw the book at him beforehand.
Smith has not just hit rock bottom, he’s drilled through the pavement to get closer to the center of the earth. Dudes who are terrible at Grand Theft Auto games don’t get arrested in the game near as much as Aldon Smith does in real life.
Forget his NFL career. That’s done. It’s unlikely the league would let him set foot in a parking lot. It’s truly sad that such great talent has been resorted to this. The comments in these threads here at Niners Nation all resonate with hope that he gets the help he needs. Aldon Smith at one point was waiting for his trip to Canton. Now it’s more and more likely it’s a trip to a correctional facility. Hopefully, he can finally get help before it’s too late.
