Expectations are sky high for Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers in 2018. Garoppolo went undefeated in his five starts for the team, earned himself a nine-figure contract, and has completely changed the perception of the organization. Not bad for a few months’ work.
The 49ers history at the quarterback position has some of the highest of highs and some of the lowest of lows. Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana is the gold standard, so naturally people are going to be curious what he thinks about Garoppolo.
Montana made an appearance on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football show, and he talked about the hype surrounding Garoppolo.
“I think it’s still a little early for it, myself. I mean, he’s obviously had a lot more success in the games he’s played in so far than the other quarterbacks that have been there recently. So, I think there’s a lot of excitement in the Bay Area about it. I think this year will be a big tell on it. They paid a lot of money for him. But I think there’s some belief there that he’ll be there for a while.”
That’s a pretty straight forward answer that doesn’t go for the hot take angle. Jimmy G had a lot of success in a short amount of time. It’s too early to say if he’s going to be the next great thing, but there’s a belief he could be the answer.
The 49ers are betting a sizable chunk of change that this is the case, but in a league where the quarterback position is so critical, it’s what you have to do. Maybe Jimmy G pans out, maybe he doesn’t. The 49ers could have waited another year, but Kyle Shanahan and company like what he brings to the table. Shanahan said they knew after Garoppolo’s third start that he was their guy. Once they made that decision, paying up was the only option.
