Draft Wire’s latest mock draft has Roquan Smith going to 49ers

New, comments

This one has the 49ers preparing for life without Reuben Foster.

We are nearly two weeks away from the 2018 NFL draft and until then, we have plenty of mock drafts to sort through. Luke Easterling at Draftwire put up a 4-round mock and it has some names that are a bit different than what we’re used to.

The mock had trades involved, but the 49ers did not trade out of the ninth pick. They went on to select Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith. Here’s what Easterling had to say about the pick:

“There are plenty of attractive options for the 49ers here, but Smith represents the best balance of need and value. A top-five talent in this year’s class, Smith would be a fantastic insurance policy for Reuben Foster, a first-rounder from last year’s draft who can’t seem to stay out of trouble off the field.”

It’s a pick that makes sense. Not only that when Foster comes back from any suspensions he may have coming his way, the 49ers linebackers would be a force to be reckoned with. He’s listed as an outside linebacker, but he very well could kick inside to Foster’s position if needed. His size could be an issue, but the kid is fast, running a 4.51 in his 40 yard dash at the 2018 NFL Combine. The only person to beat him was Shaquem Griffin with that 4.38 blaze.

Robert Saleh’s defense isn’t so predicated on size as it can be on speed, and Smith could be a great fit for it. He has been rising up draft boards and some consider him the first linebacker to be selected in the draft. Smith and Foster in the same backfield? That would be absolutely filthy.

Here are the rest of the picks listed below

2 (59): Christian Kirk (WR), Texas A&M
3 (70): Lorenzo Carter (EDGE), Georgia
3 (74): Duke Dawson (CB), Florida
4 (128): Bo Scarbrough (RB), Alabama

The second round pick is going to be pretty interesting come Day 2, the picks have been all over the place in mock drafts, but this one has a wide receiver. I can see the 49ers possibly getting the heir to Pierre Garcon drafted, but Kirk may not be the guy. Before draft coverage really amped up, some projected him to go in the first round, but his draft stock seems to slip and slip. Regardless of slippage, I don’t see Kirk lasting until pick 59 when the 49ers go and they may have other things more pressing than a wide receiver.

Lorenzo Carter has boom or bust written all over him. I do fear that he may have the same sort of situation former 49ers pick Corey Lemonier had, which was a limited size of pass-rushing moves and the league figuring him out rather quickly.

Duke Dawson could be a great pick and perfect for where the 49ers take him. If developed properly, Dawson could supplant Richard Sherman in a couple of years. Cornerback isn’t such a pressing need this year, but within a year or two, Dawson has the chance to be really, really good.

Finally Bo Scarbrough. The 49ers have Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida. Waiting in the wings is Joe Williams. If the 49ers were to have a shot at Saquon Barkley, this pick obviously isn’t happening. However, even without the running back, there’s really no need for the 49ers to draft a running back in the 4th round. Plus Scarbrough isn’t known for pass-catching abilities, somthing Kyle Shanahan has his running backs doing and something that made Carlos Hyde unfit for the offense.

How do you grade this four-round haul for the 49ers?

How would you grade Easterling’s 4-round mock draft?
