The San Francisco 49ers search for interior line help could net an intriguing option from the Mountain West. The team sent offensive line coach John Benton to Reno to work out guard Austin Corbett, according to Matt Barrows.
The 49ers currently have Laken Tomlinson, Jonathan Cooper, and Joshua Garnett as the primary competitors for the two guard positions. Corbett spent his college career playing tackle, replacing Joel Bitonio at left tackle after Bitonio was drafted i the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Scouting reports suggest that like Bitonio, the 6’4, 305 pound Corbett will move inside to guard.
Barrows brought up the Bitonio connection in discussing the Corbett news. The Cleveland Browns drafted Bitonio in 2014, and that happened to be when Kyle Shanahan was their offensive coordinator. It’s hard to assess how much a coordinator has in the draft, but the comparable athleticism between Bitonio and Corbett is worth noting.
