Report: Dontae Johnson to sign with the Seattle Seahawks

It’s a flip-flop of cornerbacks

49ers free agent cornerback Dontae Johnson will sign with the Seattle Seahawks according to a report from NFL.com reporter Mike Garafolo. Meanwhile, the 49ers signed released Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman last month.

Johnson met with the Seahawks when free agency began last month and most recently with the Minnesota Vikings. By signing with the Seahawks, it looks like a flip-flop of cornerbacks between the 49ers and Seahawks.

Johnson’s athletic ability sparked some optimism when he was drafted in the 2014 NFL draft, but he also came with several question marks. His pick-six during his rookie season helped raise his stock, but as his career wore on, he started getting more and more exposed until his inevitable benching in 2017 during a game against the Houston Texans where he was torched by DeAndre Hopkins.

Per Pro Football Focus, Johnson was ranked 17th among free agent cornerbacks. Opposing quarterbacks had a 108.7 rating when throwing against him.
