49ers brought in OT Brian O’Neill for official visit

New, comments

The team has two starting tackles for 2018, but their future beyond that is shaky.

The San Francisco 49ers are on the search for offensive line talent, and they are not just focusing on the interior. The team brought in Pittsburgh offensive tackle Brian O’Neill for an official visit, according to Matt Maiocco.

The team needs more depth at guard, but they also have to figure out their long-term plans at tackle. Joe Staley turns 34 at the end of the coming preseason, while Trent Brown is coming off a torn labrum and will be a free agent after this season. They could have their bookend tackles for the next couple years, or they could be looking for one or both to be replaced in the very near future.

Lance Zierlein projects O’Neill as a second or third round pick, and his scouting report describes someone who’s inconsistency could cost him.

O’Neill is a classic zone scheme blocker, but teams may take a look at him as a move guard with tackle potential rather than locking in with him as a blind-side tackle. O’Neill needs to get thicker and stronger or swing tackle could be his ceiling.
