Report: Cowboys to release WR Dez Bryant

New, comments

No, I don’t see the 49ers pursuing him.

Fooch’s update: And the release has happened, per Dez

This is not San Francisco 49ers news, but it’s big league news. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is meeting with wide receiver Dez Bryant on Friday, and the expectation is that Bryant will be released, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A last minute change of hear is not out of the question, but the plan right now is to release Bryant.

The move clears $16.5 million in cap space each of the next two seasons. This has been discussed for some time, but the decision to release him now is a little odd. I’m not entirely sure what has changed since February, but the move now comes after the Cowboys could have gotten some return on the cap space in free agency. They might have not felt it was necessary in February or early March, but it’s still a bit odd. It does come a few days before the team reports for the offseason workout program, so I imagine that played into it in some way.

Foot injuries have resulted in Bryant not being the same receiver the past three years that he was from 2012 to 2014. A He finished this past season with 69 receptions for 838 yards and six touchdowns. Solid numbers, but not what you pay $16.5 million for.

He will land elsewhere for the coming season, but I don’t see the 49ers being the landing spot. He doesn’t turn 30 until later this season, but the 49ers would need to think he can bounce back from the step back he has taken. Maybe they give him a call and take a look at him, but I would not expect the 49ers to seriously pursue Bryant.
