Is linebacker the 49ers only option at No. 9?

New, comments

The 49ers will be without linebacker Reuben Foster when the offseason workout program begins. Maybe linebacker is the clear call at No. 9.

The San Francisco 49ers report to their offseason workout program on Monday, and they will not be joined by linebacker Reuben Foster. The 49ers are keeping Foster away from team activities until his legal issues are resolved (or he is eventually released). His future is in doubt, which means the 49ers need a plan for middle linebacker.

It is not surprising that we are starting to see shifts in 2018 NFL mock drafts. Linebacker is becoming the popular pick, and the latest comes courtesy of MMQB. Peter King and Albert Breer put together four separate mock drafts of the top 12 picks to reflect different scenarios that could shake out on April 26th.

All four mock drafts had the same result for the 49ers at No. 9 — Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

There is plenty of debate to be had between Edmunds and Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith. Greg Valerio put together a comparison of the two linebackers over the weekend, and opinions were split.

In the four mock drafts, three have Edmunds going ahead of Smith. One has the Indianapolis Colts selecting Smith at No. 6, and then the 49ers making their pick of Edmunds at No. 9.

What happens on Thursday, April 26th? Will they go linebacker? Maybe move back and still grab a linebacker? Or maybe just go with whomever is best available, even if that person is not a linebacker?

What will the 49ers do with pick No. 9?
