With the draft one week away, it’s no surprise that the majority of the 49ers media is focused on player acquisition prognostications. Naturally, much of the discussion has shifted towards the 49ers potentially drafting linebacker help, specifically between Roquan Smith and Tremaine Edmunds. Although they project to different positions, and with wildly different career trajectories, both players look to be worthwhile additions to the fledgling defense.

An interesting storyline developed on Wednesday, as the 49ers held their local Pro Day, for draft-eligible individuals who played their high school or college ball in-state. One such attendee was Quenton Meeks, a cornerback from Stanford. The son of a coach, Meeks is well-regarded as a smart, instinctual player who lacks elite athleticism, yet possesses the length desired for the 49ers defensive system. In other words, he’s garnering favorable comparisons to newly acquired 49er, Richard Sherman - whom he has been in contact with since his college days. However, many writers have highlighted a factoid from his 2017 season which radically departs from the Sherman comparison - 0 penalties throughout the entire season.

Meeks is expected to be a second or third day selection as a project who might find success in the right system. His lack of speed is the biggest knock on him, and there seems to be unanimous agreement that solid safety play behind him is a necessity. In other words, he’s a Sherman clone, and there should be some apprehension that the Seahawks might take a flier as well.
