The San Francisco 49ers acquired Jimmy Garoppolo on October 30th this past year, and moved him into the starting lineup December 3rd against the Chicago Bears. In spite of such limited time with the 49ers, Garoppolo has already shot up the chart for merchandise sales.
The NFLPA released their year-end rankings for player sales, covering March 1, 2017 to February 28, 2018. Garoppolo ranked No. 28 on the list. Tom Brady was No. 1. The list covers all officially licensed NFL player-identified merchandise. That ranges from jerseys to shirts to bobbleheads to Fathead wall decals.
Given how quickly things materialized for Garoppolo when he joined the 49ers, it is not surprising to see him shoot up the board. That being said, it’s still kind of ridiculous given that he was on the 49ers for four of the 12 months. He had sales while he was with the Patriots, but I can’t imagine it was all that much before the trade.
One other member of the 49ers is on the list, although he did not become a 49er until after the year-long period. Richard Sherman ranked No. 33 for the year, and then signed with the 49ers on March 10th. If he bounces back from his injury, I have a hunch he will be on the list again next year.
