49ers met with Ronald Jones for workout or visit

The 49ers could use some running back depth, but how high?

The San Francisco 49ers could be looking for running back depth in the 2018 NFL Draft, and they are getting some work in on the position. Sometime in the past month, the team met with USC running back Ronald Jones. The team had a formal meeting with him at the NFL Combine, but he told Bleacher Report’s Doug Farrar that he had a follow-up meeting with them since then. I have yet to find out if it was a workout in Southern California or an official visit in Santa Clara.

Saquon Barkley will be the first running back off the board, but who goes second is a mystery. Jones has gone up and down media draft boards, with questions about his size and how he will hold up to the rigors of the NFL. He did not get a lot of opportunities in the passing game, but he performed well when he did, so maybe it’s an area where he can take a step forward in the NFL with more regular reps.

He could go anywhere from late in the first round to sometime on day two. The 49ers could use more depth at running back, but are they prepared to invest a first or second round pick in the position? The history of Kyle Shanahan and Bobby Turner suggests no, but if they think he can be a particularly special weapon, you never know.
