Another name attached to the San Francisco 49ers’ linebacker search

The San Francisco 49ers continue to search for an answer a linebacker regardless of if Reuben Foster takes a leave of absence from the team. Earlier this week, Matt Barrows reported that the team was interested in Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, they were unable get a meeting lined up.

This is common as the draft gets closer, prospects only have so much space to fill on their schedules and unfortunately, they couldn’t fit the 49ers in.

As far as Vander Esch goes, he stands 6’4, 256 lbs and finished his career with the Broncos amassing 141 tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions. He has solid NFL Combine numbers and a great instinct when navigating a blitz. His size makes him an excellent inside linebacker and a potential fill-in for Reuben Foster, and a duo when Foster returns.

The real knock on Vander Esch is he’s only had one year of starting experience, leaving BSU as a junior. He’s been given a 1st round grade in several analysis reports.

While the 49ers couldn’t schedule a meeting, Vander Esch is a very intriguing prospect that may be available for them late in the first round, provided the 49ers make a decision to trade back. Here’s a video of some highlights.
