Peter King mock draft suggests 49ers giving serious consideration to Notre Dame OT Mike McGlinchey

New, comments

The 49ers have tackles for 2018, but what about beyond that?

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of options staring them in the face with the No. 9 overall pick this Thursday. Mock drafts are focusing more and more on linebackers, but defensive backs and offensive guard Quenton Nelson make appearances. But, what if the team throws out a curve ball?

SI’s Peter King dropped his annual MMQB mock draft, and he offered something for 49ers fans to chew on. He had the 49ers picking Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith, which is not a surprise. It’s his discussion of the pick, however, where we find an interesting nugget (emphasis mine).

As a sideline-to-sideline playmaker in this draft, Smith has no peer. I gave McGlinchey and cornerback Denzel Ward serious consideration here too—as are the Niners. But I passed on McGlinchey because of the Niners’ belief that Joe Staley, who will be 34 in August, can play two more seasons at a good level. And the need for Smith, particularly with the uncertain future of linebacker Reuben Foster, could be great in defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s scheme, where athletic playmakers are a must at linebacker.

The idea that the 49ers would consider Ward is not surprising. But the mention of Mike McGlinchey is something new. The 49ers just restructured left tackle Joe Staley’s contract to give him a raise over the final two seasons of his contract. That would suggest he’s not going anywhere for the time being.

However, right tackle Trent Brown is a free agent after the 2018 season. He is coming off a torn labrum that required surgery and rehab. His weight and conditioning coming into training camp will be a big storyline. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have had considerable praise for Brown, but have also conditioned that on him needing more consistency.

If the 49ers were to spend their first round pick on an offensive tackle, that would tell us a lot about how they feel with regard to Trent Brown.

Or, this is all a smokescreen to get someone else to trade up for McGlinchey. Take your pick.
