Report: 49ers interested in day three cornerback

New, comments

The 49ers look to be ready for late day three and into undrafted free agency.

The San Francisco 49ers have been doing some digging on Vanderbilt cornerback Tre Herndon, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. There is no word on any visits or workouts, but Wilson is reporting the 49ers are one of 20 teams showing interest in a cornerback expected to go late on day three of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Herndon stands just under 6’ and weighed in at 188 pounds. He ran a 4.51 40 with a 6.75 six-cone drill time. He reportedly showed solid footwork and backpedaling skills at his Pro day last month.

The 49ers need more depth at cornerback, but it’s hard to tell where exactly they see themselves making a move. They’ve been mentioned in connection with Denzel Ward and Josh Jackson in the first round. The team was ready to give Greg Mabin a starting opportunity last season, but a calf injury shut that down. I find myself wondering where Mabin fits into the picture heading into this year’s training camp. If they are that high on him, maybe they’re willing to sit and wait on the cornerback position? Especially considering how deep it is viewed after those top couple picks.
