Cardinals making noise about wanting to move up in the draft

New, comments

There’s a ton of chatter about teams looking to trade up to get a quarterback.

The San Francisco 49ers don’t need a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft, but they will still be impacted in a big way by this year’s QB class. At least three quarterbacks are expected to go in the top eight picks, and one general manager told Adam Schefter there is a 50 percent chance four quarterbacks go in the top five picks.

One team looking at quarterbacks this year is the Arizona Cardinals. Carson Palmer’s retirement coupled with Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert leaving in free agency left Arizona with nobody at the quarterback position. They added Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon, but need to figure out their long-term solution.

The Cardinals currently hold the 15th overall pick, and given the Buffalo Bills own interest in a quarterback, Arizona might need to push hard up the draft board. The team apparently is hard at work on the phone trying to move up, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport.

The Cardinals and the Bills are the two most likely candidates to move into the top ten, but the New England Patriots could very well jump in there as well. It opens the door for a potential bidding war. The Cleveland Browns are expected to take a quarterback at No. 1. If they take the QB the New York Giants want at No. 2, GM Dave Gettleman might look to move back if he does not instead take running back Saquon Barkley or defensive end Bradley Chubb. The New York Jets are a lock to take a QB at N. 3, and then it opens up from there.

The Browns could move back from No. 4, or just go with a BPA strategy to fill one of their many roster holes. The Denver Broncos at No. 5 could use a quarterback for the long-term, but they have been all over the place in pre-draft rumors.

After that, you get the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Chicago Bears, followed by the San Francisco 49ers. There is a lot of room to maneuver in there. The Bills seem almost a lock to jump up there, which could push the Cardinals to overpay and move up as well. I have a feeling the first 90 minutes of the 2018 NFL Draft are going to be wild.
