The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 9 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, which means we will find out in the first third of the proceedings what’s going down. Well, we’ll at least find out if they are making a pick or trading down or up.
A lot of people will watch all 3+ hours of the draft tonight, but others will want to see the 49ers pick and be done with it. For those folks, I thought I’d try and come up with an estimate if when the 49ers will announce their pick. Teams have ten minutes in the first round. If every team takes the full ten minutes, the 49ers would announce their pick at the 90 minute mark. The draft gets going at 5 p.m. PT, which means the 49ers pick would come in at approximately 6:30 p.m.
However, every team taking ten minutes would result in over five hours for the first round. I will guarantee you right now the first round will not last until 10 p.m. PT. Last year, it went a touch over three hours, but also seemed to fly by pretty quickly. This year, NFL Network and ESPN have blocked out until 8:30 p.m. PT for round one. It could carry over, but like I said, last year it actually went faster than the 3.5 hour block.
The 49ers current position coupled with draft time, coupled with estimations by the TV networks allows us to further estimate when their pick might come in. If the draft goes until 8:30, that is 210 minutes of coverage. If we divide 210 by the 32 first round picks, that comes out to a shade over 6.5 minutes per pick. Based on that average, the 49ers pick at No. 9 would be announced at roughly the 59 minute mark of the proceedings, which would be 5:59 p.m. PT.
I am guessing the first nine picks go a little longer than that 6.5 minute average, but your 49ers pick window tonight is probably between 5:59 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. PT.
