The San Francisco 49ers drafted Mike McGlinchey in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and it’s safe to say it is a referendum on right tackle Trent Brown. Of course, the team is not going to admit that!
John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan met with the media to close out the team’s Thursday work, and Shanahan kept things pretty simple. He said McGlinchey would come in and compete at right tackle. The competition during OTAs and minicamp would be with Garry Gilliam. Then, once training camp arrives and Trent Brown is fully healthy, the big man would join the mix.
Someone asked Shanahan if McGlinchey would come in and be their starting right tackle. Shanahan said the hope is that either he comes in and claims the starting job, or he pushes one of the other competitors to a higher level.
It is worth noting that ShanaLynch would not rule out trading Trent Brown. Lynch said never say never, but he also recognized the importance of depth. It’s about what you’d expect in an answer.
