49ers pick LB Fred Warner with 3rd round pick (No. 70)

The 49ers have added their first defensive player

The San Francisco 49ers have selected BYU linebacker Fred Warner with a third round pick at No. 70 overall. The 49ers hosted Warner on a pre-draft visit ten days before the 2018 NFL Draft.

Warner stands 6’3, 236 pounds. Scouting reports look at him as a guy with the build of a linebacker and the mobility and speed of a safety. He looks like a guy who could get some early work in sub-packages. Long-term he has a chance to be an outside linebacker in their 4-3 defense.

The big question at linebacker is Reuben Foster. He faces legal issues due to his domestic violence arrest, although the accuser has since recanted her statement. His status with the team is unknown at this time, but he remains away from the 49ers during the offseason workout program while his case progresses. His next court date is this Monday, April 30th.
