49ers have pre-draft visit set up with LB Roquan Smith

New, comments

The 49ers could use some options at linebacker given the questions they currently face.

The San Francisco 49ers have begun the process of bringing in draft prospects to visit Santa Clara. NFL teams are allowed 30, and reports to date have mentioned that the 49ers will host Kansas State wide receiver Byron Pringle and Iowa center James Daniels. We have a third name to add to the list.

Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith told reporters at his Pro Day that the 49ers are among the teams with whom he has a scheduled visit. He is also visiting the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, and Indianapolis Colts. He will also be on hand in Arlington, Texas for the draft later this month.

The 49ers linebacker starting lineup currently has Reuben Foster in the middle, Malcolm Smith on the weak side, and Eli Harold on the strong side. It’s a solid starting trio, but Foster could very well miss some time if the league disciplines him for his domestic violence and weapons arrest or his marijuana arrest (or both). It seems unlikely the 49ers will cut Foster at this point, but his future with the team is hardly secure.

Smith is a solid option for the time being at the weak side, but it is unlikely he lasts the length of his contract. If Foster can stay out of trouble, he and Smith would be a decent pair to line up next to each other for the foreseeable future.
