The 49ers are in need of depth at linebacker with the situation around Reuben Foster. They are bringing in veteran linebacker Korey Toomer in for a visit. Korey played with the San Diego Chargers the last 2 seasons. The 49ers are expecting Reuben to miss time this season following his 2 arrests. LB Roquan Smith is expected to be another option coming out of the draft and he is coming in for a visit. He could be available when the 49ers pick 9th.
GM John Lynch has done a great job as a 1st time general manager in one year. He hit on a number of key players in last year’s draft and most importantly, he traded for and signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term deal. But according to Lynch, a key figure for him in helping learn the ropes was former GM Martin Mayhew. Martin and John were teammates at Tampa Bay and John hired Martin as senior personnel executive when he took the job.
Martin has been a mentor to John in his early 49ers career. While John seems to be a good evaluator of talent, there are some parts of the job that he didn’t know how to navigate. Having someone he knows and trust has been a tremendous help. The 49ers are expecting John and Martin to continue to make good decisions heading into the upcoming draft.
