Do you think Jerick McKinnon will go over or under 1,300 total yards?

We’re still looking at numbers and today we’ll take a look at the San Francisco 49ers recent running back addition.

ESPN’s Mike Clay put out his recent projections for the San Francisco 49ers recently. We’ve already looked at Jimmy Garoppolo’s passing numbers, and today we’ll look at running back Jerick McKinnon.

The thing that is really noted with McKinnon and any running back under the 49ers offense is that receiving yards are going to come a-plenty and may offset what may be considered small rushing totals. McKinnon is projected at 872 yards rushing (215 attempts) and 373 yards (50 receptions) receiving, which totals out to 1,245 total yards. That is not too shabby, although by comparison, Carlos Hyde finished last season with 1,290 total yards (940 + 350). The numbers indicate that would put McKinnon at a shade under 4.1 yards per carry. Given how Shanahan likes throwing the ball to running backs, McKinnon easily could get more yards receiving this year than already listed.

Last year with the Minnesota Vikings, McKinnon totaled 991 yards; 570 yards rushing and 421 yards receiving. This was based on a shared backfield with Latavius Murray, a share that slowly decayed as the season went on until McKinnon was closer to second on the pecking order.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has made it clear McKinnon will be the lead back this season. Fortunately or unfortunately—however you look at it—he’s got some depth behind him in Matt Breida and maybe Joe Williams. Shanahan stated during the 2017 season he’ll go with the hot hand at times, so maybe Breida breaks out a game or two and eats into McKinnon’s carries/yardage?

Rather than just rushing yards, I’m going to factor in total yards given the 49ers offense. Do you see McKinnon getting over or under 1,300 total yards in 2018? If you can’t see the poll below, click here.
