The 49ers began OTAs on Monday. They have OTAs today, May 24th, 29th-30th, June 1st, 4th-5th, and the 7th. The new additions will be able to participate on full offensive-defensive drills with their new teammates. There are a lot of good position battles that will happen during these next couple of weeks that will go a long way to deciding who starts and makes this team. But as always, the eyes will be on the quarterback.
In the offseason, the 49ers drafted and added a bunch of new faces to the roster. The best move they made came in securing the long-term deal with QB Jimmy Garoppolo. His 5 game sample size was enough to get him a massive deal to be the franchise quarterback. Because of the short time between the 49ers trading for him and starting his 1st game, Jimmy had limited understanding of Kyle Shanahan’s playbook last season so he didn’t get to execute all the plays in the playbook.
With a full offseason to work on the playbook, Jimmy should be in full control of the offense this season. He will be able to lead the offense and he should have better chemistry with his teammates. In OTAs, the team will be able to see Jimmy have full command of the offense with more in-depth knowledge of the playbook. It will interesting to see him direct his offense against the 49ers defense as he continues to develop knowledge of the routes and protections in the playbook. He is the leader of the offense, so the coaching staff will be looking to him to control and lead the offense to the success they expect.
