Former Dallas Cowboy receiver Dez Bryant made a social media comment over the weekend when a fan asked where he wanted to play next. The fan asked the question and Dez responded with the 49ers. The comment was deleted, but with social media, lots of people had already seen it before it was removed.
It’s easy to see why Dez would want to come to the 49ers. The excitement of having Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan’s offense would be enticing for any receiver in the league to be a part of. But the 49ers currently have 11 receivers on the roster and Dez would likely have a hard time beating out Marquise Goodwin, Pierre Garcon, Trent Taylor, and Dante Pettis. It’s doubtful that the 49ers would have any interest in him unless they think he could provide something they currently do not have. It’s unlikely that Dez will be a 49er this season.
Jimmie Ward will be competing for a starting job this season, but it’s more likely that he will be a backup when the season starts. Jimmie has had a hard time staying healthy since being drafted and now the 49ers seem to have their secondary figured out. New signing Richard Sherman will pair with Ahkello Witherspoon at the corners with Adrian Colbert and Jaquiski Tartt the starting safeties. It will be hard for Jimmie to supplant any of those guys. His versatility does help him if any of those guys go down. He’s played both corner and safety on the team so he will likely be the 1st guy up if anyone in the secondary goes down. He will still be a key player, but in a different role.
